Alginate Dressings

Alginate dressings are a natural dressing derived from different types of algae's.
Alginate dressings are often used on wounds that have a large amount of exudate
as they are highly absorbent and biodegradable. Alginate dressings maintain a physiologically moist microenvironment which promotes healing and the formation
of granulation tissue. Alginate dressings typically require a secondary dressing,
like a sterile gauze pad, to cover the alginate dressing.

Alginates have been shown to be useful in a variety of wound treatment situations;
including sloughy wounds which also produce a degree of exudate may be dressed
with alginate dressings. The gel which is formed by the alginate dressing as these dressings absorb exudate forms a moist covering over the slough preventing it from
drying out. These dressings require moisture to function correctly, so alginates are
generally not indicated for dry sloughy wounds or those wounds covered with hard
necrotic tissue.
